The focus of the School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida is to prepare our students to lead successful lives as lifelong learners and citizens. To achieve this vision the Board has committed to create and support an environment within which our dynamic organization and its educational leadership team may concentrate on performance, student achievement and community engagement. A manifestation of this function is the School Board’s adoption of a strategic plan which undergirds and aligns the functions of the District to its identified goals. Copies of the School Board Meeting minutes and School Board Agenda Items associated with the adoption of the 2005-2008 Strategic Plan and the 2009-2014 Strategic Framework are provided for your review. In addition, representative school board agenda items, minutes and presentations related to student achievement and progress related to the strategic plan and or framework have been provided.
The School Board of Miami-Dade County Florida regularly receives information capsules, research reports, holds workshops and discusses issues at regular Board meetings wherein staff provides critical information and data to them in order to inform their policy decision making process. Of particular importance to the Board is information related to progress toward the District’s strategic goal of improving student achievement and the work within the four pillars of the strategic framework Student, Parent, and Community Engagement, Education, School/District Leadership, and Financial Efficiency and Stability. Provided here are samples of workshop agendas, public hearing agendas, and special board meeting s dealing with priority issues such as legislative proposals, class-size reduction strategies, and budget discussions. In addition, the District’s Office of Assessment, Research, and Data Analysis prepares a variety of research documents and analyses of District performance which are transmitted to the Board for their review and use. During the Broad review timeframe 2007-2008 through 2010-2011, Miami-Dade County Public Schools was led by two different superintendents, Dr. Rudolph F. Crew (2007-2008) and Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho (2008-2011). Performance review documents for each have been provided in this folder.
Dr. Crew’s performance evaluation instrument for 2007-2008 was detailed and aligned to the strategic plan in place at the district during his tenure. A copy of his final evaluation is provided here.
Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho has been Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) since September of 2008. During Mr. Carvalho’s tenure the Board adopted a new strategic framework which provided for a single goal, student achievement. In keeping with this transition to a more student achievement focused method of operations, the Board’s review of the Superintendent’s performance has become more authentic and ongoing, aligned to the Strategic Framework and focused on the Superintendent’s ability to successfully navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and continue to advance student achievement within the current environment.
At the end of each school year the Superintendent has submitted a document to the School Board outlining challenges, accomplishments, and progress made towards the District’s goal of student achievement over the preceding year.
